REMEMBERING THE BEST AKUMA UKWU MGBARAKUMA NEVER HAD

The Omeruoha I of Mgbarakuma and the former Traditional Prime Minister of Mgbarakuma Autonomous Community, Late High Chief Paul Nwokocha died on 8th January, 2016, just two weeks after he had celebrated his 80th Birthday.

It would be recalled that Chief Nwokocha clocked 80 years on 26th December, 2015  and a get together party was held in his honour by his children.

The celebration which took place in his compound attracted his friends, colleagues,  relations and numerous well wishers. And  any one who saw him on that occasion would never believe that he would die two weeks later. He looked fresh, healthy and youthful, going round to ensure  guests had enough to eat and drink.

The news of his death came like a deadly blow on the people of Mgbarakuma more significantly the Umuoka village, where he hailed from. He died at the time Ndi Mgbarakuma, as well as Ubakala were still in dire need of his wise counsel and benefit from his rich fountain of knowledge. He was a role model in Mgbarakuma and he would  forever be remembered for his hard work, dedication, loyalty, honesty, humility and selfless work to Mgbarakuma community and  Ubakala at large

His people described him as a man of the people, the best Akuma Ukwu, Mgbarakuma never had.

Chief Nwokocha was born on 26th December, 1935 at. Mbawusi, where his father was a produce buyer. He attended St Anthony School, Mbawusi between 1945 and 1952, where he had his First School Leaving Certificate. He proceeded to a commercial secondary school ,  where he sat and passed his Pitman stages 1&2 examination.

He joined the service of Nigerian Port Authority, as a Fireman recruit in the Fire Service Department. He rose through the ranks to the post of Fire Service Officer on grade level 08, a position he held until his retirement in 1978.

On  retirement from service, he came back home in 1980 to contribute his quota to his father land. Beside being one of the contestants to the stool of Akuma Ukwu after the death of HRH Eze Nwazue, Chief Nwokocha was  well known to Mgbarakuma people for the various services he had rendered to the community.

He had served Mgbarakuma community in various capacities such as asst Secretary, second vice President General, first vice President General, Traditional Prime Minister during the period of Late Eze Nwazue and Regent after his death. The manner the Umuoka born High Chief was loyal and dedicated in his service to the late Eze endeared him to many that they asked him to contest for the vacant stool, which he did. He was believed to have enjoyed the support of majority of Mgbarakuma people and would have won if the plebiscite directed by the ministry of local government and chieftaincy affairs  was conducted, but he was disqualified by some people and thereby denied Mgbarakuma people an Eze that would have been accepted by all.

Until his death he was going to court, challenging his disqualification on the account of his certificate, which the Ministry of Education had confirmed was equivalent to West African School Certificate and also the selection of HRH Eze Appolus Chikezie as the Akuma Ukwu 11,  without conducting the plebiscite, which was contrary to the Mgbarakuma Chieftaincy Constitution and the directive from the Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs
